After failing to qualify for the recently concluded ODI World Cup, West Indies were bashed by the cricketing world, with many criticising the players, board and the overall system. It was thought to be the end of West Indies in ODI cricket as it was the first time the nation failed to qualify for the marquee tournament. However, since then, the Shai Hope-led side have worked on their skills and eventually once again have become the talk of the town, but this time, for all the right reasons.

The home team stunned England in the third and final ODI defeating them by four wickets (DLS method). Due to rain, the match couldn’t start on time but when it did, Matthew Forde dominated with the new ball, picking up three wickets as the Jos Buttler-led side was reduced to 45/3. Harry Brook and the skipper too failed to get going as the Three Lions were 49/5 at one stage.

Ben Duckett tried to bring some momentum as he hit 71 runs while Liam Livingstone supported him well as he hit 45 runs but it wasn’t enough. Alzarri Joseph cleared the tail as the visiting team posted 206 runs in 40 overs.

When it came to the chase, Alick Athanaze hit 45 runs while Keacy Cartey hit 50 runs, which set the platform for West Indies. However, Will Jacks picked up three wickets, which put the pressure back on the home team but the partnership of Sherfane Rutherford and and Matthew Forde was strong enough for West Indies to get over the line. Notably, Rutherford’s 41 runs off 28 deliveries proved to be extremely crucial as they were running against time due to the DLS method.

With that, West Indies secured their first ODI series win over England in 25 years. Meanwhile, Matthew Forde was adjudged Player of the Match while skipper Shai Hope was handed the Player of the Series award.
